Weâve All Been There
That awkward silence after requesting the deposit.Â
The client who seemed so keen suddenly goes quiet. Or worse, they keep asking questions but won't commit.
Let me show you how to change that.
Stop chasing clients. Start closing deals.
The Art Of Securing The Deposit
I never count a job as won until that deposit hits my account.
Letâs face it, asking for money upfront - without scaring off the client - can be tricky.
Hereâs what I tell my clients ->
My Upfront Deposit Script
âYour deposit does two crucial things:
- Secures your start date ahead of other jobs
- Allows me to order your PC items without delays
Until it's paid, nothing can be locked in.â
Why is this effective?
FOMO is often a strong motivator.Â
And this approach can weed out the timewasters.Â
But sometimes itâs not enough to convince those clients who are truly on the fence...
Make Clients Feel Safe
You need to make your clients feel safe and confident to make that transfer.
Remember: People aren't afraid to pay. They're afraid to lose their money.
And who can blame them? Dodgy builders are a stereotype for a reason.
So make sure you back up your deposit request with:
- Strong Google reviews (aim for both quality and quantity)
- A great portfolio of successful projects, displayed proudly on your socials. Ideally with strong user engagement.
- Professional quote documentation (use software or a good template)
- Clear payment terms.
Itâs All About Communication
Be upfront about:
- What items/work the deposit will cover
- When work will start
- How their money is protected
- Your track record of success
Your confidence gives them confidence.
Know Your Limits
Remember, each Australian State or Territory stipulates the maximum deposit amount for licenced builders.
In NSW, itâs 10%. You canât go higher even if you want to.
If youâre a tradie (not a builder), there are no legal limits. But stick to around 20%. Going too high can scare off good clients.
The Payoff
When you nail the communication:
- You convert more quotes
- Deposits arrive sooner
- Clients trust you from day one
- Ghosting becomes rare
But itâs not just about winning the job - it's about running a stronger, more professional business.
